Before GTA 6 launches on 19 November, there has been exactly one evening that shows what a GTA 6 event does to Twitch: the premiere of "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" on 27 August 2026. Two months on, with the dust settled and the numbers published, here is what happened on Twitch that night and what it suggests for launch week.
What Rockstar released
Rockstar's roughly 27-minute film premiered on Netflix at 3pm ET on Thursday 27 August 2026 and went up on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official site at 9pm ET, six hours later (Rockstar Newswire). It was the first long look at in-game footage, captured on PS5, following Jason and Lucia through Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.
The Netflix window was controversial with fans because the first six hours sat behind a subscription, while the YouTube upload was free. On Twitch, thousands of channels went live to react, break down the footage and argue about it in chat.
The numbers, with sources
The most detailed public figures come from the analytics firm Streams Charts, reported by Inven Global on 29 August and PC Games Hardware on 30 August 2026:
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Peak concurrent viewers across co-streams | about 3.97 million (3,970,738) |
| Channels covering the reveal | 9,038 |
| Total hours watched | about 5.2 million |
| Share of hours watched | Twitch about 44%, YouTube 34.8%, Kick 20.2% |
| Biggest single stream | IlloJuan on Twitch, about 233,500 peak viewers, a record for his channel |
| Previous 2026 showcase high | Summer Game Fest, about 3.81 million |
Two caveats matter. These are co-stream and reaction figures, not Netflix's own audience, which Netflix does not publish in comparable form. And they are third-party measurements, the best available but not official platform data.
Netflix later reported its own figure: 31.1 million views in the first four days, which put the Extended Look at No. 1 in its film charts, according to Variety.
The outage
Demand outran capacity. According to PC Games Hardware, citing Streams Charts, both Twitch and Netflix had problems during the presentation, and some viewers could not reach streams for 40 to 50 minutes, with complaints filling the chats (PCGH). That is worth remembering for 19 November: if a reaction video did this, launch-day gameplay streams across every time zone could strain the platform again.
What it tells us about launch week
- Twitch is still the biggest single stage for GTA 6 moments. It took the largest share of hours, even though Kick drew more everyday GTA V viewers than Twitch in mid-2026 (Win.gg).
- Spanish-language creators lead the big nights. IlloJuan and Rubius topped the co-stream charts, ahead of IShowSpeed. Our streamer directory is organised by language for that reason.
- Event spikes are not the same as launch streams. A 27-minute reaction is one shared moment. Launch week is millions of players streaming different missions for days, so the totals could be far larger while individual peaks are spread thinner. Any forecast of launch-day records is a projection, which is how we keep it on our viewer records tracker.
Since then
Rockstar's only new video since August is the 90-second Launch Trailer of 15 October 2026. No official launch broadcast has been announced. For timing and time zones on 18 and 19 November, read how to watch the GTA 6 launch on Twitch.
